How long does an Alber e-motion battery last, and what actually wears out?
Axis · Updated:
In Alber e-motion wheels, what wears out over time is mainly the cells inside the battery, not the motors, hubs or control electronics. Cells lose capacity with every charge cycle and simply with age, so after a few years of use the range drops noticeably and the wheels may cut out under load. You don't need to replace the whole wheels when that happens: replacing just the cells is enough, keeping the original Alber housing, sockets and BMS.
Healthy hardware, tired chemistry
It's one of the most frustrating situations: the wheels look like new, the motors run perfectly, the electronics work, and yet the equipment is becoming less and less predictable. It's hard to accept that an expensive, well-built device might end up in a corner just because the chemistry in the battery has aged. And it doesn't have to.
Alber's motors, housing and electronics are built to last for years. It's the cells that wear out, and they're the only part that really needs replacing.
Why cells lose capacity
Every rechargeable cell, whoever makes it, ages in two ways:
- with every cycle: charging and discharging gradually reduce the amount of energy the cell can store,
- over time: cells age even while the wheelchair is standing still (this is called calendar ageing).
Wear speeds up with things like high temperatures, frequently running the battery down to zero, heavy loads (steep ramps, kerbs) and long periods left with a flat battery. An ageing cell doesn't just hold less energy; it also has higher internal resistance, which leads to voltage drops under load. We explain this in the article why Alber e-motion wheels cut out uphill.
There's no single expiry date. Two batteries bought at the same time can be noticeably different after a few years, depending on how heavily and in what conditions they've been used.
Signs of worn cells in Alber e-motion wheels
- The range runs out halfway through the day: it used to last all day, and now you charge the wheels during the day or skip longer outings.
- Cutting out on a slope or a kerb: the indicator still shows charge left, but the wheels suddenly lose power assist.
- Beeping and voltage errors: the wheels signal errors or run down faster than the indicator suggests.
- Charging problems: the battery won't charge fully, or the charger stops recognising it, for example after a long break (more in the article Alber e-motion battery not charging).
Before you decide it's the cells, rule out the simpler causes: dirty or loose contacts, a damaged charger cable, tyre pressure that's too low. If those are fine and the symptoms keep getting worse, worn cells are usually to blame.
What wears out and what stays
| Component | Does it wear out? | What we do during regeneration |
|---|---|---|
| Cells (Li-ion or NiMH) | yes: they lose capacity and power | replaced with brand-new, branded cells |
| Connections and nickel strips | they can over time | replaced (spot-welded with pure nickel strip) |
| Internal wiring | sometimes | replaced if damaged |
| Control electronics (BMS) | usually not | stays original; we check it during diagnostics |
| Housing and sockets | usually not | stay original |
Because the control electronics stay original, after regeneration the wheels work with your remote, the mobile app and the original charger exactly as before.
Regeneration instead of replacing the whole set
Battery regeneration means replacing the cells inside your original battery with brand-new ones. We regenerate batteries for the e-motion M11, M12 and M13 (NiMH, 24 V) and the M15 and M25 (Li-ion, 25.3 V). We connect the new pack to the original Alber BMS and test it under load: a full charge and controlled discharge cycle, checking capacity, voltage stability and temperature.
It also means less electronic waste: working motors and a solid housing don't end up on the scrap heap. On top of that, we plant a tree for every completed order. You'll find the prices for all options in the article how much Alber e-motion battery regeneration costs.
When to stop using the battery
If the battery is swollen, cracked, getting very hot or smells burnt, stop using it and don't open the housing yourself. Contact us before you ship it.

FAQ
- How many years does an Alber e-motion battery last?
- There's no single expiry date. Cells lose capacity with every cycle and over time, so after a few years of use the drop in range is usually noticeable. How fast that happens depends on how much you use the wheels, the temperature and how the battery is stored.
- Do you replace the Alber electronics during regeneration?
- No. We keep the original control electronics (BMS), housing and sockets. We replace the cells, the connections and, if needed, the internal wiring.
- How do I know the problem is the cells and not the motor?
- Typical signs of worn cells are shorter range, cutting out under load despite a charged battery, and voltage errors. Diagnostics give you certainty: they're free, and if we find a motor or electronics fault, we'll contact you before starting work.
